Before I go any further lets make one thing clear. The beaches in Key
West are not what most people envision Tropical Island beaches to be.
Unlike most Islands in the world the Florida Keys are made of coral.
In general the Keys are very sallow and surrounded by a living reef
system. This reef system creates a extremely large lagoon that the entire
Florida Keys reside in. With the Atlantic Ocean to our east, and the
Gulf of Mexico on our west. To most peoples surprise we have no waves.
Without waves you don't have sand. These is good for reefs because sand
and reefs Don't mix. The grains of sand kill the living coral by clogging
the opening to the living chamber of the coral pulp, or the shifting sand
covers and suffocates the entire piece of reef. On the other hand this is
not so nice for the Key West beaches in the way most people envision
beaches to be. Most the beaches are made up of crushed coral, and various
sizes of coral rock with some sand mixed in. If you plan on spending a
lot of time on the various beaches I very much recommend you make
a trip to K-mart when you first get here and buy a pair of beach shoes.
They run about $5 or $6 and will make your beach experience a lot more
enjoyable. What also works is regular flip flops, so if you got some don't
forget to pack them. This is really good advise if you have kids they will
enjoy the beaches a lot more wearing flip flops.
