Ford's Hand Cut Coins
I Have seen a lot of people cutting coins over the years and I always here the same
question. Isn't that Illegal? They are referring to the fact that it's against the law to deface
money. The way the law states that it's against the law to deface U.S. Currency with the
intent of fraud. It was passed in the mid 1800's when gold coins where circulation, and a
$20 gold piece had $20 worth of gold in it. You could take a knife and shave a little off
now that coin does not have $20 worth of gold in it. Keep doing this and your shavings
start to add up. Hence the law was passed. With the cutting of these coins there is no
intent of fraud so It's Legal!
