/ Sailing Adventures FAQ's about Where do you go snorkeling? Most all snorkeling trips take you to Sand Key Reef. It is located about six miles south of Key West Sailing out their takes about 20 minuets give or take some. The reef partially comes out of the water during low tides. The island is home to a lighthouse the original brick lighthouse was destroyed in 1846. The one you see now was built in 1853 and is a historical site. The island itself changes in size an shape according to the weather. It is made up of small shells and crushed coral. Gullies and rock fingers best describe the reef surrounding the island. Close to the island you snorkel above elk coral reaching up toward the surface plus patch reefs. Giving you a good variety of corals to see. There is also a good variety of sea life to check out. Just some of what you may see are barracuda, grouper, parrot fish, nurse shark and loggerhead turtles for a few. You never know what you may see. Be sure to take along an underwater camera Being this is where most of the snorkeling trips go to there is usually quite a few other snorkelers there.
