On Stars and Stripes we do things a lot differently than other sailing catamarans in Key West. First we don't overload the boat with sixty five to a hundred and twenty six snorkelers. We limit our numbers to half our capacity on our day trip, and seldom sail full on our sunset cruise. Many other boat crews here in Key West deal with hundreds of passengers a day. That overexposure makes them treat people like cattle... herd 'em on and herd 'em off.... We treat people the way we would like to be treated, and besides, we get to talk to our guests and get to know them. That doesn't happen on overcrowded cattlemarans. Our crews are professional and courteous.
We also don't go to the same old reefs that all the other boats go to. That's the real advantage to a longer trip. We can make choices unavailable to the half day boats. There are dozens of locations to visit... Why go to the same spots three times a day, day in and day out ? That's no fun for us and since many of our guests are repeat customers, every time they return they may get to visit a snorkel spot that was different from their last trip. The road stops in Key West but the islands and reefs continue for many miles to the West. Our experienced Captains pick the best spots to visit for that day's weather conditions. If it is too rough in the Atlantic, then we go to the Gulf of Mexico, or the back country or perhaps to a quiet island anchorage. Every place we go is special in it's own way. Our draft is only twenty inches so we can get into spots that the other boats can only envy. We see dolphins, turtles, seabirds and a wide variety of ocean life every day. Since Stars and Stripes is a catamaran she sails flat and comfortable, with no leaning on your ear like a conventional single hulled boat. You can set your drink down without it spilling over... Very civilized... Our cockpit seating area is 70% shaded, so you can get out of the sun any time you desire. While our broad decks offer plenty of space for laying out and working on your tan.
You will also learn a little history and a little about animal behavior. Basically you will find out what makes the Keys such a special place and your stressful daily life up north will be forgotten. The only boat in Key West with a permit to take passengers into the Islands of Key West National Wildlife Refuge. Check in, is at 9:00 am. Departure is at 9:30 am. Returns between 3:30 and 4:00 pm.
