Key West Duval Street Information

Duval Street

Duval St. is the main tourist area in Key West. It is a combination of Main St. anywhere USA. With all the trapping good, and bad of a boardwalk on any ocean resort on the east coast. It is about one mile long. Reaching from the Atlantic ocean at the lower end. All the way to the Gulf of Mexico at the upper end. You will find this is where you will spend a lot of your time while you visit Key West, and quite possibly a lot of your money. We average about 30  bars per square mile here in Key West and this is where you will find most of them. For those of you who like to shop till you drop you have found nirvana. Not to mention the vast array of restaurants to be found all along its length. Just remember to get off the main track and enjoy the many side streets with shops tucked away all over the island. I will include some of these on Duval St. but not all by no means. For most you will find for yourself when you visit.

Usually during the hot summer days downtown is a little quieter. Most people are at the beach or the kids are playing by the hotel pool. The exception is when a ship in in town. The sidewalks fill up with people trying to see and do as much as they can with the limited time that they have in this port. Most people really enjoy Key West and will plan another visit when they can spend more time. For now they enjoy a small taste of the island life while they are in town. Shops run along Duval from the Gulf to the Atlantic a little less than a mile. Ending up at the south end of Duval at South Beach. This area was hit pretty hard during hurricane George a couple years back and now up to speed again

This is upper Duval St. (the Gulf end) during the day. Lots of shops
on this day downtown was fairly busy with a cruise ship in.

Key West Duval St. at Night

Key West Duval Street

You will find that Duval St. has many faces. At night the shops start to
close. The shops more toward the middle stay open later. Then the
main theme shifts to the bars and clubs. Duval is roughly divided in
half the northern end from the Gulf to about Southard St. is the tourist
end as far as bars and clubs go or (meat markets) in general. Most the
bars and clubs from Southard to the Atlantic are gay bars and clubs. I
will try and give you a good cross section of all these in the Bars section
of this site.

For now a couple of Tips.

bullet

First for the families with little kids unless you want to do a lot of
explaining you may want to avoid the gay side late at night, usually
the little ones are in bed by then any way.

bullet

For the ladies if you get tired of the (meat market) atmosphere and
just want to go dancing some of the best dance clubs are down here.
Here you can dance all night long and not have to be bothered with
getting hit on.

bullet

For the guys now that I have told the ladies where to go. A tip for
you. These girls have been drinking and dancing all night long. By
one two o'clock they have kind of changed there minds and the guys
there are paying no attention to them.

bullet

For the gay ladies over the years the ladies enjoy the bars on both
ends of Duval St. As far as I know there is no predominantly ladies
club in Key West. If I find different I will let you know. To see a couple
of ladies dancing together on the dance floor no one gives it a second
though. The gay guys will usually stay at the other end. You never know
when you may get some drunk (redneck) and start gay bashing.
