Red Mangrove Ecosystem Tour:

Out of over 50 types of Mangrove trees, only the Red Mangrove can grow in salt water, and actually perform osmosis, drinking only fresh water and leaving the salt in the ocean. Boot key offers over 500 acres of Red Mangrove forest. There is no land there, and certainly no human development. Our guides lead you through the narrow channels which the tides flow in and out of, feeding large inland lagoons within the key. These channels are as narrow as 3 feet wide and are accessible only to paddlers.

After helping you select a kayak in which you are comfortable and teaching you how to use it, our guides lead you down the harbor, then into the mangroves. Paddle up Whiskey Creek to a lagoon called "As Good As It Gets", then take the Anna Mangrovia Channel to the largest lagoon, Anna Mangrovia. After exploring there, we head eastward down the Salt Lake Expressway to Not So Great Salt Lake. Most groups then head out Sisters' Creed and back to the harbor. If everyone wants to, we can take the long way home, traveling through another mile of narrow tidal channel called the Muffin Man Mile, then suddenly appearing in the real world, about a mile west of the shop on Boot Key Harbor.

The Red Mangrove forest is an incredibly unique ecosystem, home to huge amounts of marine life and birds. Located in The Eastern Flyway, hundreds of species of birds stop by on their way to wherever it is that they go. Others like Egrets, Herons, and Pelicans spend the entire year on Boot Key. If we cannot identify a bird for you we normally call it a Harbor Chicken.
