History
of the Gardens Hotel in Key West
The Gardens Hotel in Key West is one of the fine examples of
Bahamian Architecture on the Island Listed on the
National Register of Historic Places it was built in the 1800's. Peggy Mills
bought the Gardens Mansion in 1930 and
wanted to create a botanical garden. In time she she accumulated a 1/4 of a city
block clearing it of all the existing buildings.
Peggy worked on the garden from 1930 - 1968 when it was opened to the public. In
Key West she was known as "The
lady of orchids" for collection of orchids from Hawaii and Japan. Peggy also got
old brick from Cuba, England and
Honduras. She used them to lay out winding walkways throughout the garden.

Being a family friend of the then Cuban President Batista she was able to
collect rare botanicals from there. Plus some large tinajones. They are 1 ton
earthenware jars used by Spanish settlers to collect rain water. They are still
part of the gardens
in Key West
and are the only tinajones in the country. Peggy Mills died in 1979
and the property changed hands several times until brought in 1992 by the
Hettinger's. They embarked on a major multi million dollar reconstruction of the
property adding a few new buildings that are the garden and courtyard
accommodations now.
Kate Miano moved to Key West and opened and learned the ins and outs of running
a bed and breakfast. She alway
Gardens Hotels Key West and when it came back on the market in 2004 she was not
hesitant in getting it.
Owning and managing The Gardens Hotel Key West is the fulfillment of Kate's
dream.
