Just Possibly the Best Place for Doing Nothing
New York Times  Dec 28
It’s tempting to think of the Lower Keys, a roughly 36-mile stretch of Florida islands between Marathon and
Key West, as something of a lonesome no-man’s land.

Key West Island City House Hotel key west florida

The Island City House. Originally, built as a private home for a wealthy Charleston merchant family in the 1880's, this grand three-story Victorian mansion was then converted into the Island City House Hotel by its owners, in anticipation of the railroad's arrival in 1912. Today after a faithful restoration, this house offers 12 parlor suites, each individually furnished with Victorian antiques, lace curtains, and hardwood floors.

The Arch House
.
Built as a carriage house to the Main house in the 1880's, it remains the only standing carriage house on the island. This two story house, trimmed with gingerbread, allows the island trade winds to pass through its arch and into the tropical gardens within. This house offers 6 suites furnished in a casual island style of bright colors against cool white wicker, mosquito netting, Bahama ceiling fans, and hardwood floors.

The Cigar House
.
This red cypress wood house was built to replicate the Alfonso Cigar Factory that once occupied this site approximately one hundred years earlier. Overlooking the pool and Jacuzzi deck, this house is nestled quietly in the rear garden and shaded by swaying palms. This house offers 6 of our most spacious parlor suites, each individually furnished in elegant tropical plantation style, with rattan furnishings, Bahama ceiling fans, French doors, and hardwood floors.

The Gardens
.
Lush tropical gardens enfold and unite the three guest houses that comprise this property. Winding brick walkways meander past mountains of bromeliads in bloom, a babbling coral rock fountain and fish pond, and shaded secret garden seats. All varieties of exotic plants thrive in this miniature jungle; night blooming serus cactus, Christmas tree palms, Spanish lime trees, bougainvillea, orchids, stag horn ferns, and coconut palms, to name a few.
