Key West Light Tackle Fishing Compass Rose Trips

Compass Rose Charters
Specialty Trips

Quite often when out on a full day or sometimes even on a half day clients decide they want to mix it up a little. Some people like to wreck fish in the morning then eat lunch on a deserted island. Then snorkel shallow water wrecks then fish again in the afternoon.

Maybe instead you'd like to tarpon fish the morning then dolphin or sailfish the afternoon. I am always opened for your suggestions after all it is your day let me help you make the most of it.

Shark Fishing
Can be done in a number of different ways and different locations. You can harbor fish at night or deep water wrecks, but my favorite is chumming in the shallow water channels. It is an amazing sight to see a 300-600 lbs shark charging the baits in less then 12 feet of water. Then to catch it on light tackle and feel the raw power of one of natures most destructive predators. Maybe drifting Wood's Wall for Mako, Six Gill and Great Hammerhead sharks and monsters is more your style. The sight of a prehistoric predator is just awesome. You need to know that all sharks that are not edible will be released.

Night Fishing
Brings out all the creatures of the deep blue sea. Each time of year has a special night fishing, whether it's snapper or grouper spawns or wreck fishing in the dark. Sharks at night are an amazing experience to see their eyes glow. Fishing under the stary sky is just magical. Ask me for details on what is happening at night when your coming down.

Kite fishing
Has a mystique that I don't feel it deserves. Kite fishing is really very basic in principal. The kite acts as an outrigger or a spreader to hold lines away from the boat. Your fishing line runs up to a release clip on the kite's main line. The advantage is when a kite is properly fished it holds your bait at the surface, keeping the entire leader out of the water. The swims frantically trying to dive or escape and struggles on the surface. When the predator (sailfish, shark, wahoo, king mackeral) attacks the helpless bait, the release clip pops and your battle begins. The two best things about kite fishing are that it is very hands on and also is very visual. You get to see the fish eat the bait right on the surface. Quite often we'll tease the predator by lifting the bait out of the water right in front of it. Driving the fish nuts and soon he will strike at almost anything with a vengeance.

Deep Dropping
Is a different type of fishing. It is bottom fishing in anywhere from 350 feet of water to 600 feet. It is as close to meat fishing as I get. You use heavy tackle and drop all the way to the bottom use 3 and 4 pound weight to catch large bottom fish. The fish you are normally targeting are golden tile fish, snowy grouper and true american reds. It is a interesting fishery because when you drop down you drop a line with 6 or 8 or even 10 baited hooks, hopefully filling each one. The most important factor of deep dropping is a slow current, a three or four knot current makes it all but impossible to reach the bottom. So you have to pick your days carefully. It's just another option when out fishing if fishing gets slow.

Fly Fishing
In Key West takes many forms. Whether you are fishing for sharks, dolphin, tarpon, blackfin tuna, mackeral or sailfish all requires the right conditions. Mostly all of the fly fishing in the keys starts with catching live bait (pichards) and using them as a live bait chum slick. The action can be fast and furious requiring only short casts for success. Many of the offshore species are extremely fast in the water so line management becomes one of the largest challenges. I do supply some fly fishing tackle but I am not offended if you would like to bring your own. Many anglers only feel comfortable casting their own equipment and that is not a problem. When the conditions are right the fly fishing in key west is like no where else in the world.

Swordfish
Is one of the last great game fish. One the most sought after game fish and the most elusive, have taken up residence in the waters off Key West. New live bait techniques have proven to be quite successful. A swordfish is by far the strongest of the bill fish family. The swordfish's purple iridescent glow at night and the sheer muscle on the other end of the line have few comparisons. The majestic giant of the deep blue has has been showing up in fairly reliable numbers, making fishing for them again a possibility. You must beware that the majority of my swordfish catches are releases. The majority of the fish are between 75 and 150lbs. They lie far offshore so the weather plays a role in the times when it is feasible to fish for them. Conditions need to be right to enjoy a night of fishing outside of Wood's Wall. But when all goes well, the night is tranquil and peaceful till the reel screams in the dark. Then the fight begins.

Tournaments
In the keys are a way of life. There are tournaments in Key West for everything that swims. (Dolphin, Marlin, Tarpon, Sailfish, Wahoo, King Mackeral) If you are looking to up the anti of your fishing experience Compass Rose is tournament rigged and ready to go. The prize money in tournaments can range from $1,000 to $250,000 it's all up to you. It is a new adventure when the dolphin on the other end of your line is worth $25,000. Some people fall in love with tournament fishing while others just enjoy the peace and quite of their hobby. If you are interested in tournament fishing call me we'll try to set up the tournament of your dreams. I have the full tournament schedule for the year on hand.

Shrimp Boat Fishing
Is a very unique type of fishing. It entails running out to the shrimp boats first thing in the morning before they dump their shrimp boat trash. The amount of fish that congregate behind the boats is amazing. The types of fish range from black fin tuna to cobia to bonita to sharks. The sheer numbers of fish are staggering. It happens to be an amazing fly fishing or spinning tackle opportunity. The only problem is it requires a bright and early start because they shrimp all night and sleep all day so you need to be there just after day break. Certain times of year are better than others and weather is important because it is a long run.

Out Island Trips

Mother Ship fishing trips are available.
This is when you want to fish the Tortugas or some far offshore wrecks for a couple of days. I can arrange to have a 50- 60 foot mothership on site to provide a place to sleep watch tv and tell the fish stories of the day. All your meals will be included by the chef on the mothership. These trips take a lot of planning and require some advanced notice. They can be the perfect getaway back to nature or world class long range fishing trip. The best thing to do to set one of these up is call me and we'll see if we can make the schedule work.
