A Tour of Fort Jefferson at the
Dry Tortugas National Park

If you are in any way a Civil War buff you will love taking this walk back in
time. The Fort Jefferson has seen many usages over the years as you will
see in the history section of this site. Check it out while visiting Key West.

The Fort is completely surrounded by a moat. A quick walk around
gives you an idea of its size.

As you come to the west side of the fort you can see that time has
not been to nice to this giant. Around the openings of the fort they
used iron to reinforce the brick. The salt water has rusted away
as it does the iron swells as it flakes. This has busted loose the
surrounding brick. Where ever you see damage to the exterior
wall you will see the decaying iron framework that caused it.

Along the dock side of the fort and along the south side on restoration has been
done on the lower level. How much more will be restored only time will tell.
